From Lisbon to Istanbul on a bicycle with no training

More than 13000km on an old mountain bike, with minimal budget and zero preparation

In 2016 I embarked on a solo, self-supported, bicycle adventure from Lisbon to Istanbul.

The objectives of this adventure were:

  • Researching how trading and migration has influenced substainance food across cultures facing the Mediterranean
  • Demonstrate it is possible to complete a solo adventure with a limited budget and no training

Quick facts

  • +12233 km (the odometer was installed about 700km after departure, so the actual distance I covered was a bit more than 13000km)
  • 187 days
  • 14 countries
  • No training
  • Unsupported
  • Old, 90's MTB
  • Stealth camping
  • 5€ daily budget
